Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation technique in which the outermost layer of the skin is gently removed. Fine crystals or a diamond tip are moved across the skin while the loosened skin cells are suctioned away at the same time.

Application

The treatment refines skin texture, freshens a dull complexion and can soften superficial irregularities, fine lines and mild pigmentation. A session takes about half an hour. Visible results usually require several treatments a few weeks apart. It is also often used to prepare the skin for active ingredients or a chemical peel.

Good to know

Afterwards the skin is often slightly red for a few hours, but there is hardly any downtime. Consistent sun protection is important. Deep scars or wrinkles cannot be removed this way. Caution is advised with active acne, rosacea or very sensitive skin. A gentler, fluid-based alternative is hydradermabrasion.
