Nipple Correction in Zurich (Löwenstrasse)

The shape of the nipple and areola has a significant influence on the appearance of the breast. Sometimes the nipples are perceived as too large, too prominent or asymmetrical. In other cases, patients would like a firmer, more harmonious shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant changes in weight.

Nipple correction is an outpatient and comparatively minor surgical procedure.

Our expert in nipple correction, breast lifts and breast augmentation is Dr med. (I) Nunzioluca Chianese, specialist FMH in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Arrange your no-obligation consultation at the Swiss Derma Clinic in Zurich.

Key facts

Nipple correction can reduce enlarged areolas, correct inverted or very prominent nipples and improve asymmetry. The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis or during a short hospital stay, either on its own or in combination with breast augmentation, a breast lift or breast reduction.

When nipple correction may be appropriate

The reasons for nipple correction are as individual as our patients. They may relate to congenital characteristics or to changes that have developed over time.

Reasons for nipple correction include:

  • enlarged areolas
  • very prominent nipples
  • inverted nipples
  • nipples of different sizes or asymmetrical nipples
  • changes following pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • changes in shape after breast surgery

We discuss which procedure is suitable for you on the basis of your wishes and your individual anatomy.

Which procedures are possible?

We use different surgical techniques for nipple correction.

An enlarged areola, for example, can be reduced and harmonised by removing a narrow ring of skin.

Prominent nipples can be surgically shortened while preserving their natural shape if desired.

Inverted nipples can usually be corrected by releasing shortened connective-tissue strands. The nipple then remains in an outward position. The technique we use depends, among other things, on whether the inversion is congenital or developed later. Preserving the ability to breastfeed is another important consideration.

A stand-alone procedure or a combination with breast surgery

Nipple correction is a minor outpatient procedure.

If appropriate, it can be combined with breast augmentation, breast reduction, a breast lift or implant replacement. This allows the shape, volume and nipple position to be coordinated within a single operation.

The procedure

Depending on the extent of the correction, the procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia.

The incisions are generally placed along the natural borders of the areola. The aim is a naturally attractive breast shape with discreet scarring.

Recovery

Temporary mild swelling, a feeling of tightness or bruising may occur after the operation. Most patients are comfortable returning to social activities after a few days.

Strain on the breast and intensive exercise should be avoided during the first few weeks. The final breast shape develops as the swelling subsides.

Nipple correction in Zurich – FAQ

FAQ

Nipple correction in Zurich – FAQ

Does a newly inverted nipple need medical assessment?

If a nipple has recently become inverted on one side only, the cause should be assessed before an aesthetic correction. This is particularly important if there is a palpable change, discharge, a skin change or pain. A congenital tendency towards inverted nipples is usually already evident from puberty.

Can the ability to breastfeed be preserved after nipple correction?

This depends on the initial situation and the surgical technique. When inverted nipples are corrected, the milk ducts may be preserved or may need to be partially divided. We therefore cannot guarantee that breastfeeding will remain possible. Any wish to have children should be discussed during the consultation.

Does nipple sensitivity change after the procedure?

After the procedure, the nipple may temporarily feel less sensitive, numb or more sensitive to touch. Sensation returns to normal for many patients during the healing process. Permanent changes are possible and form part of the pre-operative consultation.

Can an inverted nipple retract again after correction?

Recurrence is possible. The risk depends on the severity of the inversion, the characteristics of the shortened tissue strands and the technique used. A pronounced inverted nipple may require a more extensive correction than a mild inversion.

Can areolas of different sizes be made more symmetrical?

A larger areola can be reduced and adjusted to match the opposite side. Complete symmetry can rarely be achieved on the human body, and small differences may remain after healing.

Where are the scars placed after nipple correction?

The incisions depend on the type of correction. When reducing an areola, the scar usually lies at the border between the pigmented and normal skin. For nipple correction, the incisions are placed as close to the nipple as possible. Scars that are initially visible generally become lighter and softer over time.

When can I return to work and exercise after nipple correction?

Depending on the extent of the procedure, light office work may be possible after a few days. Pressure, friction and heavier strain on the breast should be avoided during the initial healing phase, as should intensive exercise. Resume exercise only once the wounds have healed securely and your surgeon agrees.

Can nipple correction be combined with another breast operation?

Yes. Nipple correction can be combined with a breast lift, breast reduction, breast augmentation or implant replacement. This may be appropriate if the shape, position or volume of the breast is also to be changed. The additional surgical scope is assessed individually beforehand.

Our Q&A texts are by no means a substitute for a medical consultation. For an individual and well-founded medical assessment, we recommend a personal consultation at the Swiss Derma Clinic. We are happy to take the time for you!
