Understanding Why Eyelids Change
A certain amount of fat around the eyes serves a purpose — it cushions and protects the eye and its surrounding structures. When this fat increases, it disrupts the natural contour and can create a sense of pressure on the eyes. Additional effects of skin ageing around the eyelids include:
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Displacement of fatty tissue
- Descent of the brow
- Excess skin that can affect the visual field
The result can be hooded upper lids, under-eye bags, reduced peripheral vision, or a permanently tired expression.
Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery: Always Tailored to You
No two eyelid corrections are the same. Every patient brings a unique anatomy, skin quality, brow position, and set of personal expectations — which is why we do not offer one-size-fits-all solutions.
Blepharoplasty may be appropriate for:
- Drooping upper eyelids (hooded lids)
- Pronounced under-eye bags
- Fatty deposits in the upper or lower lid area
- A feeling of heaviness or a restricted visual field
In some cases, the underlying issue lies in the position of the eyebrow. A subtle brow lift — performed through a small incision along the hairline — may then be the more targeted approach, either on its own or in combination with eyelid surgery.
Statistically, approximately 85% of eyelid corrections are performed for aesthetic reasons and around 15% for medical indications — among both women and men.
What Matters Most: An Honest Consultation
Eyelid surgery is an elective procedure. The decision should be made calmly, without pressure, and with full information. We provide everything you need to know, and you will have ample time for all your questions. Your consultation at Swiss Derma Clinic takes approximately 45 minutes. During that time, we:
- Explain the anatomical background in clear, understandable terms
- Discuss realistic possibilities and their limits
- Inform you about available alternatives
- Will openly advise against proceeding if expectations are unrealistic or the procedure is not medically appropriate
Before-and-after images can offer a general reference point — but what matters most is the personal conversation, because every case is unique.
Full Transparency, Including About Alternatives
We always discuss alternatives openly and explain why certain treatments are — or are not — appropriate for your individual situation.
The Treatment Process in Zurich
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia and takes approximately 60 minutes, including preparation and aftercare.
- For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is placed within the natural lid crease, making the resulting scar virtually invisible.
- There is no pain during the procedure.
Recovery takes a little time. Most patients look noticeably better after around four weeks, with the final result visible after three to four months once healing is complete. Scarring varies from person to person and depends in part on individual skin type. Our overriding aim is always a natural outcome and the full protection of your health.
