In brief
Otoplasty is used to correct protruding ears, changes in shape or asymmetries. At the Swiss Derma Clinic, the treatment is carried out by Dr. med. (I) Nunzioluca ChianeseFMH, a specialist in plastic surgery with many years of experience in aesthetic corrections in the facial area. The procedure is always based on the individual shape of the ear, the cartilage structure and the proportions of the face.
This is usually performed on an outpatient basis, often under local anesthesia. The shape is permanently changed by sculpting the ear cartilage.
When an ear correction can be useful
The most common reason for an otoplasty at the Swiss Derma Clinic is protruding ears. The cause is often an insufficiently developed ear fold (anthelix) or an enlarged auricle.
Other changes can also play a role:
- Asymmetrical ear shapes
- deformed or irregular cartilage structures
- Conspicuous ear proportions in relation to the face
Correction is generally possible regardless of age. Many procedures are carried out in childhood, but an adjustment is also possible in adulthood without any problems.
Anatomy of the ear: shape and cartilage
The outer ear consists mainly of elastic cartilage. This determines the shape and position of the ear.
Protruding ears often lack the natural fold. In other cases, the cartilage is too pronounced and the ear tilts outwards.
With otoplasty, the cartilage is modeled, folded or repositioned with fine sutures.
The procedure at the Swiss Derma Clinic in Zurich
The operation is usually performed via an incision behind the ear. The scar is placed along the natural skin fold and is barely visible later on.
The procedure usually takes one to two hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia is often sufficient for adults, while general anesthesia is often chosen for children. During this entire time, you will be looked after personally by our team and Dr. Nunzioluca Chianese. You will then come to our practice in Zurich for check-ups and aftercare.

Healing process and stabilization
After the operation, the new ear shape is stabilized with a bandage. It protects the tissue during the first few days and thus supports the healing process.
Afterwards, a headband may be useful for a few weeks, especially at night. This prevents unintentional bending of the ears. Swelling and a feeling of tension are normal in the initial phase.
The final shape becomes apparent after a few weeks, as soon as the tissue has fully adapted.
Lasting result
The change in shape of the ear cartilage is permanent.
Careful follow-up treatment in the first few weeks is important. It makes a significant contribution to ensuring that the result heals as planned.
