Electromagnetic muscle stimulation (EMS)

Electromagnetic muscle stimulation (EMS) is a non-invasive procedure in which a powerful, pulsed magnetic field triggers muscle contractions. These contractions occur at a frequency and intensity that cannot be achieved through voluntary exercise. The skin is not broken.

Application

EMS is used to strengthen and tone muscles on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs or arms. While the patient lies or sits, an applicator is placed on the area; a session takes about half an hour. Some devices combine the magnetic field with radiofrequency to also act on fatty tissue and skin firmness. A course of several sessions is usual.

Good to know

There is no downtime, though a sensation similar to muscle soreness may follow. EMS is no substitute for exercise or weight loss and is not suitable for larger fat deposits, for which cryolipolysis or liposuction are more appropriate. It is not used in people with pacemakers, metal implants in the treatment area or during pregnancy. Without maintenance sessions and exercise, the effects fade over time.
