Radiofrequency (skin tightening)

Radiofrequency is an energy-based skin tightening treatment in which high-frequency alternating current heats the tissue at depth. The skin surface remains largely intact.

Application

The controlled heat causes existing collagen fibres to contract and stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin. The method is used for lax skin on the face, neck, décolletage or body, such as the abdomen and upper arms. When combined with fine needles it is called radiofrequency microneedling, which can also improve skin texture and scarring.

Good to know

Depending on the device, several sessions are needed, and the tightening develops over a few months. Most people can return to normal activities straight away, and mild redness fades quickly. The effect is moderate and does not replace surgery for markedly lax skin. A related method using focused ultrasound is ultrasound lifting (HIFU).
