Cupid’s bow (lip contour)

Cupid’s bow is the curved contour in the middle of the upper lip that resembles the bow of Cupid, the god of love. It is formed by two peaks at the lip border that lead up into the vertical philtral columns towards the nose. A well-defined Cupid’s bow is considered a feature of a youthful lip.

Application

In aesthetic medicine, Cupid’s bow serves as a guide for the lip contour. Small amounts of hyaluronic acid can trace and accentuate it, and techniques such as Russian lips also focus on this area. If the upper lip has lengthened and the bow is barely visible, a lip lift can shorten the distance to the nose and bring the contour back out.

Good to know

With age, Cupid’s bow flattens, the lip outline becomes less sharp and the upper lip lengthens. Restraint is key when treating it: an overemphasised or unnaturally pointed contour is quickly noticed. The shape is individual, so any correction is guided by the existing anatomy.
