Temporal hollowing

Temporal hollowing describes depressions at the sides of the forehead between the eyebrow and the hairline. It is often less noticeable than wrinkles, yet it shapes the overall impression of the face.

Causes

The main cause is age-related loss of fat and bone in this area. Major weight loss, intensive endurance sport or a naturally slim build can also cause the temples to hollow early on.

Symptoms

The temples look sunken and the contour between forehead and cheek appears interrupted. The outer part of the eyebrow often drops as well, and the face looks narrower, more angular and more tired.

Treatment

The usual approach is filling with hyaluronic acid or biostimulatory substances such as poly-L-lactic acid, which prompt the body to produce collagen. Because of the blood vessels in this region, precise anatomical knowledge is essential, and a blunt cannula is often used. Results last from several months to over a year depending on the product. Fat transfer is an alternative.
