Neck lift (platysmaplasty)

A neck lift, also known as platysmaplasty, is a surgical procedure to tighten the neck. The platysma is a thin, flat muscle beneath the skin of the neck that loosens with age and can show as vertical bands.

Application

Through a small incision under the chin, and often also behind the ears, the muscle edges are stitched together and tightened, and excess skin is removed. Fat can be suctioned at the same time if needed, for example for a double chin. The aim is a clearly defined angle between chin and neck.

Good to know

A neck lift is often combined with a facelift, as the neck and lower face age together. A compression garment is usually worn for a few days to weeks afterwards, and swelling settles within one to three weeks. Risks include bruising, scarring and contour irregularities. For mild platysmal bands, botulinum toxin can help temporarily.
