A double chin is an accumulation of fat beneath the chin, medically known as submental fat. It makes the transition between chin and neck look soft and undefined.
Causes
Besides excess weight, genetics play a major role: even slim people can have a pronounced fat pad under the chin. Declining skin firmness with age, a receding chin or a particular jaw shape can also contribute.
Symptoms
A typical feature is a fullness under the chin that flattens the angle between chin and neck. The face appears rounder and the jawline loses definition, especially in profile.
Treatment
Smaller fat deposits can be reduced with injection lipolysis or cryolipolysis; several sessions are usually needed. For larger volumes, liposuction of the chin is an option. If the skin has also become lax, tightening treatments or a neck lift may be considered. Chin augmentation can further improve the contour.
