Inframammary fold

The inframammary fold is the natural crease at the lower edge of the breast where it meets the chest wall. It is held in place by connective tissue and largely defines where the breast visibly begins.

Application

In breast surgery, the inframammary fold is an important point of reference. In a breast augmentation, the incision is often made here because the scar later lies hidden in the crease. Depending on implant size and breast shape, the fold may be deliberately lowered slightly or specifically reinforced so that the implant stays in the intended position.

Good to know

If the folds sit at different heights on each side, the breasts look asymmetrical. With tuberous breasts, the fold is often set too high and is narrow. A scar in the inframammary fold usually becomes inconspicuous with normal healing, but it can take up to a year to fade completely.
