Genioplasty (chin surgery)

Genioplasty is the surgical correction of the chin. It changes the chin’s size, projection or shape and can noticeably improve the balance between nose, lips and jawline.

Application

In bony genioplasty, the chin bone is cut through an incision inside the mouth, repositioned and fixed with small plates. Alternatively, a chin implant is placed. Common reasons are a receding or overly prominent chin. It is often combined with nose surgery, as both shape the profile; the golden ratio may serve as a reference.

Good to know

Swelling settles within one to two weeks, and temporary numbness of the lower lip and chin is possible. Other risks include infection or asymmetry. Smaller corrections can be achieved without surgery using fillers, for instance as part of a jawline treatment, although the effect is limited and not permanent.
