Forehead lines are horizontal lines running across the forehead. They are expression lines and are among the first visible signs of skin ageing.
Causes
The main cause is the frontalis muscle, which lifts the eyebrows, for example when looking surprised or compensating for heavy upper lids. With age the skin loses elasticity and firmness, so repeated movements leave permanent creases. UV exposure and smoking intensify this effect.
Symptoms
At first the lines only appear when the brows are raised (dynamic lines). Later they remain visible even with a relaxed face (static lines) and can make a person look tired or worried.
Treatment
Dynamic forehead lines are usually treated with botulinum toxin, which relaxes the muscle in a targeted way. Careful dosing is important so the brows do not drop. The frown line is often treated at the same time. Deep, static lines can additionally be softened with hyaluronic acid or skin boosters.
