Deep plane facelift

A deep plane facelift is a facelift technique in which the surgeon works beneath the SMAS and lifts the skin and deeper tissue layers as a single unit. The facial retaining ligaments are released in a targeted way.

Application

This allows the midface to be lifted effectively as well, which often responds only partially to more superficial techniques. The method suits marked laxity of the cheeks, jawline and neck and can be combined with a neck lift. Because the skin is not tightened separately, the result usually looks natural.

Good to know

The procedure is technically demanding and requires considerable experience, as the dissection takes place close to facial nerves. Downtime is around two to three weeks, and swelling may last longer. Compared with the SMAS lift, the dissection is deeper; which technique is appropriate depends on the anatomy and the findings.
