Breast asymmetry

Breast asymmetry refers to a noticeable difference between the two breasts in size, shape or position. Slight differences are entirely normal; asymmetry only becomes relevant for treatment when it is conspicuous or distressing.

Causes

The breasts often develop to different extents during puberty. Congenital conditions such as tuberous breasts or an underdeveloped chest muscle can also be responsible. Later on, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, surgery or injury can increase the differences.

Symptoms

Visible signs include unequal volume, folds beneath the breast at different heights, areolas of different sizes or heights, and differences in shape. In everyday life, a bra may not fit properly on one side. Many people find the asymmetry emotionally distressing.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause. Options include enlarging the smaller breast, reducing the larger one, a lift, or a combination. Minor differences can be evened out with fat, see breast augmentation with own fat. Perfect symmetry cannot be achieved, even with surgery.
