Blunt cannula

A blunt cannula is a fine, flexible hollow needle with a rounded tip and a side opening. In aesthetic medicine it is used as an alternative to a sharp needle, mainly for injecting fillers.

Application

Through a small entry point made with a needle, the cannula is advanced beneath the skin and the product is distributed in a fan pattern. This allows a larger area to be treated through few entry points. The technique is popular for the temples, cheeks, tear trough and jawline when using dermal fillers.

Good to know

The rounded tip tends to push blood vessels aside rather than pierce them. This lowers the risk of bruising and of vascular occlusion, but does not rule it out. For very precise corrections, such as the lip border or deep placement on the bone, a needle is often more suitable. The right technique depends on the area and the goal.
