Filler (dermal filler)

Fillers are injectable substances that replace volume, shape contours or pad out wrinkles. They are placed into different layers of the skin with a fine needle or a blunt cannula.

Application

Hyaluronic acid is used most frequently. There are also fillers based on calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid, which additionally stimulate the body’s own collagen production. Permanent fillers made of silicone or acrylate are now considered outdated, because any complications remain permanent as well.

Good to know

Fillers and botulinum toxin complement each other but work differently: fillers replace volume, botulinum toxin relaxes muscles. Static lines, visible even without facial movement, respond better to fillers; dynamic lines respond better to botulinum toxin.
