Umbilicoplasty (belly button surgery)

Umbilicoplasty is a procedure to correct the shape of the belly button. It is performed on its own or as part of an abdominoplasty.

Application

Reasons include a protruding, stretched or distorted navel, for example after pregnancy, weight change or a small umbilical hernia. In an abdominoplasty, the navel is routinely repositioned because the abdominal skin above it is moved. The aim is a natural-looking, slightly recessed shape with the scar as discreet as possible inside the navel. As a standalone procedure, the correction is usually performed under local anaesthesia.

Good to know

Downtime after umbilicoplasty alone is short, often just a few days. Most of the scarring is hidden inside the navel, but it can thicken or narrow the opening, see hypertrophic scar. If an umbilical hernia is present, it is repaired in the same procedure. Where the abdominal muscles have separated, correcting the navel alone is not enough.
