Tumescent local anaesthesia

In tumescent local anaesthesia, a large volume of heavily diluted anaesthetic solution is introduced into the fatty tissue. The tissue swells firmly in the process, which is where the name comes from.

Application

The technique is standard in liposuction. The solution numbs the region, narrows the blood vessels and loosens the fatty tissue so that it can be suctioned more gently.

Good to know

As a result the procedure can frequently be carried out without general anaesthesia. Blood loss and bruising are considerably less than with older techniques. Some of the fluid drains back out through the entry points in the first hours; this is intended.
