Dorsal hump (nasal hump)

A dorsal hump is a visible bump on the bridge of the nose that is particularly noticeable in profile. It is one of the most common reasons for nose surgery.

Causes

In most cases the hump is inherited and becomes more pronounced during puberty, as the nasal bone and cartilage finish growing. It consists of an upper bony part and a lower cartilaginous part. Less often, it develops after a broken nose.

Symptoms

A nasal hump is primarily an aesthetic feature and causes no symptoms in itself. If the septum is deviated at the same time, however, nasal breathing may be impaired. Some people feel their nose is too dominant for their face.

Treatment

The hump can be removed permanently with rhinoplasty, after which the bridge is closed and reshaped harmoniously. For small humps, a liquid rhinoplasty with filler can visually even out the contour, but it does not make the nose smaller.
