Masseter hypertrophy

The mas­se­ter is the powerful che­wing mus­cle at the jaw ang­le. When it is enlar­ged, the lower third of the face looks wide and squa­re. The cau­se is often noc­turnal tee­th grin­ding or strong clen­ching of the jaw.

Appli­ca­ti­on

Botu­li­num toxin injec­ted into the che­wing mus­cle redu­ces its acti­vi­ty. Over a few weeks the mus­cle volu­me decrea­ses and the con­tour beco­mes nar­rower. At the same time, com­plaints such as mor­ning jaw pain or ten­si­on hea­da­ches often ease.

Good to know

The tre­at­ment has a medi­cal and an aes­the­tic bene­fit at once. Che­wing remains ful­ly pos­si­ble, sin­ce only part of the mus­cle strength is redu­ced. The effect lasts rough­ly four to six months.
