IPL (intense pulsed light)

Strict­ly spea­king, IPL is not a laser. Ins­tead of a sin­gle beam of light, a flash lamp emits a broad spec­trum of light, which is nar­ro­wed down to the desi­red ran­ge by filters.

Appli­ca­ti­on

The light is absor­bed by red blood pig­ment and brown pig­ment. It tre­ats dila­ted veins, red­ness in rosacea, pig­ment spots and sun dama­ge, and IPL is also used for hair removal.

Good to know

Becau­se the light is absor­bed by both pig­ment and blood, IPL is only sui­ta­ble to a limi­t­ed ext­ent on tan­ned or dar­ker skin. The skin should not have been expo­sed to inten­se sun for seve­ral weeks befo­re treatment.
