Ablative laser therapy

Abla­ti­ve lasers remo­ve tis­sue. The light ener­gy vapo­ri­ses the upper­most lay­er of skin in a tar­ge­ted way, and beneath it a heat sti­mu­lus prompts the for­ma­ti­on of new col­la­gen. The skin then rebuilds itself.

Appli­ca­ti­on

Typi­cal examp­les are CO2 and erbi­um-YAG lasers. They tre­at deeper wrink­les, acne scars, sun dama­ge and benign skin lesi­ons. Becau­se of the grea­ter depth of action, work is usual­ly frac­tion­al, mea­ning only part of the area is treated.

Good to know

Abla­ti­ve pro­ce­du­res have the most mark­ed effect but also the lon­gest down­ti­me: the skin is red, swol­len and crus­ted for seve­ral days. Sun pro­tec­tion and avo­i­ding the sun for weeks are essential.
