Sofwave® is a non-invasive ultrasound technology for improving wrinkles, skin texture and skin firmness – with a highly focused delivery of energy into the mid-dermis. The system works with parallel ultrasound beams (SUPERB™), which direct the thermal effect in a controlled manner to a depth of approximately 0.5–2.0 mm, centred at around 1.5 mm. The aim is to stimulate the formation of new collagen (neocollagenesis) without damaging the epidermis. Integrated contact cooling protects the skin surface and increases comfort. In clinical protocols, Sofwave® is typically used for the face, jawline/neck and brow area; in addition, there is now FDA clearance for the non-invasive improvement of the appearance of skin laxity on the upper arm – of interest to patients who are looking for an alternative to invasive lifting procedures. Treatments are easy to plan, there is little downtime and results develop gradually over a period of weeks. In practice, Sofwave® fits ideally into programmes aimed at “lifting without a scalpel” and – depending on the indication – can be combined with fillers, toxins or topical regimens. For the patient journey, it is important to set realistic expectations: Sofwave® improves firmness and the appearance of wrinkles, but does not replace surgical tightening procedures in cases of pronounced laxity. With the right patient selection, the technology offers a convincing balance of efficacy, safety and comfort.
