Jowls

Jowls are areas of sagging tissue that hang over the jawline on either side of the chin. They blur the clear contour between face and neck.

Causes

With age, skin and connective tissue lose collagen and elasticity. At the same time the fat pads of the midface shrink and shift, and bone along the jaw recedes. Gravity pulls the tissue downwards. Genetics, major weight changes and sun damage speed up the process.

Symptoms

A typical sign is an interrupted, wavy jawline. The lower third of the face looks wider and heavier, often accompanied by marionette lines.

Treatment

In mild cases, fillers can support the midface and jawline. Energy-based treatments such as ultrasound or radiofrequency tighten the tissue moderately. Thread lifts raise it temporarily. For marked laxity, a surgical facelift provides the most lasting correction, with a recovery time of one to two weeks.
