Tuberous breasts are a congenital condition in which the breast does not develop fully during puberty. The breast looks narrow, tube-like or constricted and may affect one or both sides.
Causes
The cause is a tight, constricting ring of connective tissue at the base of the breast. It prevents the glandular tissue from expanding evenly downwards and outwards as it grows, pushing it towards the areola instead.
Symptoms
Typical signs are a narrow breast base, an underdeveloped lower breast and a high, tight inframammary fold. The areola is often enlarged and protrudes. There is frequently also a marked asymmetry between the two sides. Severity ranges from barely noticeable to clearly visible.
Treatment
Correction is surgical. The constricting ring is released, the glandular tissue redistributed and the inframammary fold lowered. Volume is usually added as well, using an implant or the patient’s own fat. An enlarged areola can be adjusted in the same procedure with an areola reduction.
