Eye bags

Eye bags are bulges beneath the eyes that can make the face look tired or older. Unlike temporary puffiness after a short night, true eye bags persist.

Causes

Over the years, the connective tissue and supporting structures of the lower lid lose firmness. The fat pad surrounding the eyeball can then push forward. Genetics also play a major role, which is why eye bags can appear at a young age. Fluid retention, allergies or lack of sleep make them temporarily worse.

Symptoms

The typical sign is a soft bulge beneath the eye, often with a shadow line below it. It is frequently more noticeable in the morning. Eye bags should be distinguished from dark circles, which are mainly about discolouration and volume loss.

Treatment

Skincare products and cooling only ease temporary puffiness. For genuine fat bulges, a lower eyelid lift is the treatment of choice. In selected cases, a slight step towards the cheek can be smoothed out with filler.
