Otoplasty in Zurich

Protruding or asymmetrical ears can be perceived as very annoying – often since childhood.

Otoplasty (surgical ear correction) is a proven surgical procedure to permanently bring the ears closer to the head and harmonize their shape.

At the Swiss Derma Clinic, otoplasty is carried out precisely, individually planned and with high aesthetic standards – with the aim of achieving a natural and inconspicuous result.

When does otoplasty make sense?

Ear correction may be appropriate in cases of:

  • Protruding ears
  • Asymmetrical ear shape
  • Absent or poorly defined antihelix
  • Psychological distress (e.g. in social or professional settings)

The goal is not a “perfect” ear shape, but harmonious facial proportions.

Who is a suitable candidate for otoplasty?

  • Adults
  • Teenagers
  • Children (generally from around age 5–6, once ear growth is largely complete)

A medical assessment is essential to determine the optimal technique and timing.

The procedure – explained transparently

  • Outpatient surgical procedure
  • Local anaesthesia (general anaesthesia for children if necessary)
  • Incision typically made behind the ear
  • Reshaping of the ear cartilage
  • Duration: approx. 60–90 minutes

The scars are generally hidden behind the ear.

Recovery and downtime

  • Bandage or headband for several days
  • Followed by a night headband for several weeks
  • Swelling and mild discomfort possible
  • Socially presentable again generally after 7–10 days
  • Final result visible after several weeks

FAQ

Is ear correction painful?

The procedure is well manageable. Post-operatively, only mild pain or a sensation of tension typically occurs.

Are scars visible?

Incisions are generally made behind the ear and are barely noticeable afterwards.

Is the result permanent?

Yes. The new ear shape is generally permanently stable.

Is there a risk of the ears protruding again?

With correct technique and aftercare, this risk is low. This will be discussed during the consultation.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

For children, cost coverage may be possible under certain conditions. This is assessed on an individual basis.

Our Q&A texts are by no means a substitute for a medical consultation. For an individual and well-founded medical assessment, we recommend a personal consultation at the Swiss Derma Clinic. We are happy to take the time for you!
