Areola reduction

Areola reduction is a procedure in which an enlarged or uneven areola is made smaller and reshaped.

Application

A large areola may be inherited or develop through pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight changes. With tuberous breasts, it is often enlarged and protruding. During the procedure, a ring of skin is removed from the edge of the areola and the skin is drawn together with a fine suture. It is usually carried out under local anaesthesia and can be combined with a breast lift or augmentation.

Good to know

The scar runs along the edge of the areola, where the change in colour helps to conceal it. In the first months, tension on the suture can cause the areola to stretch slightly again or the scar to widen. Sensation and the ability to breastfeed are generally preserved, as the milk ducts are not cut. Correction of an inverted nipple is a separate, related procedure.
