Upper eyelid lift

An upper eyelid lift is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and, where needed, a little muscle or fatty tissue are removed from the upper eyelid. It is the most common form of blepharoplasty.

Application

It is mainly considered for hooded eyelids that make the eyes look tired or, in more pronounced cases, restrict the field of vision. The incision follows the natural eyelid crease, so the scar is barely visible later on. The procedure usually takes around an hour and is generally performed under local anaesthesia, with light sedation if preferred.

Good to know

Swelling and bruising usually settle within one to two weeks, and the stitches are removed after a few days. Possible risks include infection, delayed wound healing or temporarily dry eyes. If the whole eyebrow sits low, an upper eyelid lift alone is often not enough, and a brow lift may be more appropriate.
