Hormonal skin ageing (menopause)

Hormonal skin ageing refers to the changes in the skin caused by falling oestrogen levels during the menopause. Oestrogen supports the production of collagen, moisture and sebum; when it declines, the skin often changes noticeably within a few years.

Application

Typical signs include a rapid loss of collagen, thinner and drier skin, reduced firmness and slower wound healing. Some women also notice increased sensitivity, pigmentation or breakouts. Skincare is therefore often switched to richer, barrier-supporting products, and aesthetic treatments that stimulate collagen can help improve skin quality.

Good to know

Hormonal skin ageing adds to intrinsic skin ageing and sun-related ageing. Hormone replacement therapy can affect the skin, but the decision to use it is made for medical reasons rather than for the skin alone and belongs in a gynaecological consultation. Sun protection and a healthy skin barrier remain essential at every stage of life.
