Intrinsic skin ageing

Intrinsic skin ageing is the natural ageing process of the skin, driven from within. It is determined mainly by genetics, hormonal changes and a gradual decline in cell function. It is also known as chronological skin ageing.

Application

Over the years, cell renewal slows down, the skin becomes thinner and drier, and it produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid. Fine lines appear and the tissue loses firmness. This pattern is typical of areas of the body that are rarely exposed to the sun, such as the inner upper arms. In women, falling oestrogen levels during the menopause accelerate the process (hormonal skin ageing).

Good to know

Intrinsic ageing cannot be stopped. However, it accounts for a smaller share of visible facial ageing than photoaging. Skincare with retinoids and moisturisers, as well as treatments that stimulate collagen production, can soften its effects. Reversing the process is not possible.
