Seborrheic skin

Seborrhoeic skin, also known as oily skin or seborrhoea oleosa, is a skin condition characterized by excessive sebum production by the sebaceous glands. This leads to an oily sheen to the skin, enlarged pores and an increased tendency to blemishes. The so-called T‑zone on the face, which includes the forehead, nose and chin, is particularly affected, but the back and chest can also produce more sebum. The causes are manifold: genetic predisposition plays an important role, and there is often a familial clustering. Hormonal factors are decisive; male sex hormones in particular stimulate sebum production. This is why seborrhoeic skin often occurs during puberty and can improve with the menopause. Stress, an unbalanced diet, certain medications and climatic factors such as heat and humidity can also increase sebum production. The appearance is characterized by shiny, oily-looking skin, especially in the T‑zone, enlarged, highly visible pores, a tendency to blackheads, spots and acne, thicker, more robust skin and sometimes coarse-pored skin. One advantage of seborrheic skin is that it ages more slowly and develops wrinkles later than dry skin. The diagnosis is made by observation and can be objectified by measuring the skin’s oil content. Treatment and care is aimed at regulating excess sebum production without drying out the skin. Gentle but thorough cleansing twice a day with mild, soap-free products is important. Use light, oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers. Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells and prevents clogged pores. Products with salicylic acid, niacinamide or zinc can regulate sebum production. Retinoids or benzoyl peroxide can be used for acne. Mattifying powders or primers can visually reduce shine. It is important not to use products that are too aggressive, as this can paradoxically stimulate sebum production.
