The masseter is a strong chewing muscle in the back of the cheek. If we grind our teeth and place an incorrect load on the jaw, it can become enlarged. In most cases, such incorrect loading occurs unconsciously. Possible consequences: The jaw contour becomes wider and pain can occur. Tension headaches, jaw and neck pain are typical. It is not uncommon for the tension to radiate into the shoulders towards the eyes or temples.
Masseter Botox is an effective treatment option. We use it to protect the function of teeth and muscles – and for a slimmer facial shape.
What effect does botulinum toxin have on the chewing muscles?
Botulinum toxin is a proven muscle relaxant. Finely dosed, it regulates the muscle activity of the masseter. Excessive tension is reduced and the chewing muscle recedes slightly in the weeks following treatment. Clearly visible, yet very natural. The chin-jawline appears narrower and softer. There is no downtime.
When Masseter-Botox is suitable:
We have found out: Patients who unconsciously grind or clench their teeth benefit most from the treatment. And thus with:
- Teeth grinding or heavy clenching
- unilateral or bilateral jaw tension
- Tension headaches in the temple and neck area
- pronounced „square“ lower jaw
- asymmetrical chewing
- Jaw pressure during periods of stress
An esthetic contour as a treatment goal
Many of our patients would like a more harmonious lower jawline. If the masseter is pronounced, the shape of the face often appears heavy. This changes when the muscles relax. Restrictions to facial expressions do not occur with correct application.
The effects
- Nocturnal chewing pressure decreases noticeably.
- Pain in the temporomandibular joint improves.
- Less strain on teeth and gums.
- Tension-induced ear pain or ringing in the ears will subside.
- The quality of sleep often improves.
- Tension-related neck, throat and headaches subside.
- The cheek contour becomes narrower.
Treatment procedure
The treatment only takes a few minutes. The procedure: We palpate the masseter, determine the dose individually and inject (inject) the active ingredient directly into the muscle fibers. The effect begins after a few days and stabilizes after two to four weeks. Depending on the findings, adjustment treatments are possible after a few weeks.
Masseter-Botox also has a lasting effect: when the grinding subsides, unconscious muscle activity also decreases. An effect that influences well-being in the long term.
What is important to us at the Swiss Derma Clinic:
Masseter-Botox is a combination of aesthetic and medical treatment. Muscle tension, blockages or incorrect strain are not the cause of physical complaints. And, as with Masseter, they can also affect the external appearance. Just think of poor posture and the effects on the body’s silhouette. These and other correlations are important to us – our approach at the Swiss Derma Clinic is holistic. We therefore consider all aspects, even when it comes to aesthetic treatments. This is the only way we can recommend more effective alternatives, advise against an application or recommend it with a clear conscience.

FAQ
How does jaw pain manifest itself, starting from the masseter?
An overloaded masseter muscle, for example, causes morning jaw pain, tension when chewing, tenderness at the rear angle of the jaw or facial pain. Many patients also report accompanying headaches or neck pain.
Does Masseter-Botox influence facial expressions?
No. Only the excessive muscle strength is reduced, not the basic function. Eating, speaking and all facial expressions are retained. Only very vigorous chewing may feel unfamiliar in the first few days. The muscle gets used to the reduced load very quickly.
When does a visual change become apparent?
Functional relaxation occurs after a few days. As the muscle slowly regresses, the visible changes in the jaw contour develop gradually over the course of a few weeks. Not as an immediate effect, but instead harmoniously and naturally.
Is the treatment useful for asymmetrical facial contours?
If there is one-sided clenching or grinding, the masseter can become more pronounced on one side. We can compensate for the muscular asymmetry with an individual dosage of active ingredients. As a result, the contour also appears more even.
