Treating children’s skin conditions in Zurich

Children’s skin reacts differently and more quickly than adult skin. Sometimes all it takes is a small trigger such as heating air, a new detergent, an infection, sweating during sport or stress and it itches and burns. It is not uncommon for pustules or a rash to develop. This is stressful for children and parents.

For your peace of mind: Many skin conditions are harmless. Others need to be diagnosed and treated at an early stage. In pediatric dermatology, the spectrum is broad and ranges from eczema, allergies and infections to rarer skin diseases. In Zurich, we are happy to be your trusted partner when it comes to pediatric skin diseases. Make an appointment here or give us a call.

Children’s skin reacts differently—and often faster—than adult skin. Sometimes a small trigger is enough: dry indoor heating, a new detergent, an infection, sweating during sports, or stress. It may start to itch or burn, and pustules or a rash can develop. This can be distressing for both children and parents.

To reassure you: many skin changes are harmless. Others, however, should be diagnosed and treated early. In paediatric dermatology, the spectrum is broad—ranging from eczema, allergies and infections to rarer skin conditions. In Zurich, we are happy to be your trusted point of contact when it comes to children’s skin concerns. Book an appointment here or give us a call.

What matters with children’s skin?

Children are not small adults. This applies to the entire body—and therefore also to the skin. The immune system and the skin barrier are still developing. Conditions can look different and may escalate more quickly. A dermatological assessment is advisable, and we generally recommend avoiding home remedies when the cause is unclear.

Why families come to our dermatology clinic

At Swiss Derma Clinic, we often see skin problems in children that significantly affect everyday life. Typical accompanying symptoms include itching, sometimes sleep disturbance, or visible areas on the face and hands. For example:

  • Eczema (e.g., atopic eczema/atopic dermatitis, diaper area)
  • Infectious skin changes (bacterial or viral, e.g., warts)
  • Urticaria (hives) and allergic reactions
  • Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (also possible in childhood)
  • Acne (from early-onset acne to teenage acne)
  • <Moles and birthmarks

Important: similar symptoms can have very different causes. Red patches are not automatically eczema. Spots are not always acne. And dry skin may be a temporary, harmless issue—or it may point to a disrupted skin barrier.

How we proceed at Swiss Derma Clinic

We start by asking questions and listening carefully: When did the skin problems begin? Have you noticed triggers or patterns? What have you already tried? In many cases, we can identify the cause quickly—for example, skincare products, medications, or contact with certain plants or substances can trigger a reaction. We then perform a clinical examination and, depending on the findings, arrange the appropriate dermatological work-up.

Swiss Derma Clinic is a specialist practice for dermatology, dermatologic surgery and laser therapy, offering individually tailored medical care. We stand for thorough diagnostics and both proven and modern treatment approaches—also for sensitive skin, when gentle methods are preferred, and in more complex courses.

Modern paediatric dermatology means: less irritation, individualised approaches

With children, the key is choosing the right treatment steps. A holistic approach is often the best direction—because the skin is a systemic organ, closely connected to the environment as well as internal and psychological processes.

When is a prompt medical review recommended?

Some situations should be assessed by a specialist without delay:

  • ➔ If your child has severe symptoms, cannot sleep, or scratches until the skin bleeds.
  • ➔ If a rash occurs with fever or spreads/moves quickly.
  • ➔ If areas are weeping, look infected/purulent, or are very painful.
  • ➔ If there is rapid worsening around the eyes, lips, or in the diaper area.

Swiss Derma Clinic covers a broad range of dermatology. If you are worried, a well-founded assessment is worthwhile. Book an appointment at our practice in Zurich.

FAQ

Kinderhauterkrankungen behandeln in Zürich

When should a rash be assessed?

An assessment is advisable if the rash lasts longer than a few hours, is distressing or uncomfortable for your child, spreads, itches, weeps, hurts, or is associated with fever. Recurrent skin problems should also be evaluated dermatologically. In general, it makes sense to see a doctor whenever you are concerned.

Can children’s skin problems be a sign of allergies?

Allergies are only one possible cause. Many skin changes are due to a disrupted skin barrier, infections, or irritants such as sweating, friction, or skincare products. A specialist examination allows us to distinguish allergies reliably from other causes.

Can stress or emotional strain worsen children’s skin problems?

The skin and nervous system are closely connected. Stress, lack of sleep, or emotional strain can intensify itching and inflammation—especially in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, hives or acne. This is also taken into account in a holistic assessment.

From what age is a dermatological assessment useful?

At any age—including in infants. Especially when skin problems occur very early, specialist assessment can prevent unnecessary treatments or unsuitable skincare.

Do skin conditions in children develop differently than in adults?

Children’s skin is more sensitive and conditions can present differently. For example, psoriasis or an allergic reaction may look non-specific. The decision whether to monitor or to treat should be made individually and by a qualified professional.

Our Q&A texts are by no means a substitute for a medical consultation. For an individual and well-founded medical assessment, we recommend a personal consultation at the Swiss Derma Clinic. We are happy to take the time for you!
