How does the fractional laser work?

A fractional laser is based on tightly focused laser light that is delivered in microscopic columns and can penetrate into the mid-layers of the skin. It creates tiny micro-injuries that stimulate the skin’s own repair mechanisms.

Effects and indications

  • Skin rejuvenation and improvement of skin texture
  • Treatment of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Treatment of acne and acne scars
  • Treatment of sun damage
  • Refinement of enlarged pores

Individual treatment with the fractional laser

Medical-aesthetic laser treatments belong in qualified and experienced hands. The device settings are adjusted individually according to skin type, skin concern and pigmentation.

Treatment procedure

Before every treatment, we provide you with comprehensive advice on possible side effects, expected results and alternative options. The treatment itself takes around 20 minutes (depending on the region). Your skin may be red and slightly swollen for a few days. Mild flaking and a “sanding effect” (a slightly rough surface) are also possible. All these effects are signs that regeneration has begun. Important: Use sun protection consistently for at least four weeks.

Combination treatments at Swiss Derma Clinic

Depending on your skin condition, we can combine the fractional laser with additional methods. Examples include:

  • PRP to accelerate skin regeneration
  • Medical microneedling (alternating treatment)
  • Skinboosters and biostimulators
  • Cosmetic ultrasound treatments

FAQ

Permanent Makeup Entfernung in Zürich

Is fractional laser suitable for active acne?

For active inflammatory acne, fractional laser is not the method of first choice. The acne should first be dermatologically controlled and treated. Afterwards, depending on the skin condition, the laser can be used to treat remaining scars or irregularities. At Swiss Derma Clinic in Zurich, we provide detailed advice on this – also with regard to cosmetic or medical alternatives.

What is the difference between an ablative laser and a fractional laser?

An ablative laser removes the uppermost skin layer over a larger area, whereas a fractional laser only creates tiny, punctual micro-injuries in the deeper layers. As a result, fractional laser therapy is gentler, promotes regeneration and is usually associated with a shorter downtime.

How do I prepare for a fractional laser treatment?

A dermatological skin analysis prior to the procedure is not absolutely mandatory, but it is very helpful for planning. You should stop using retinoids or fruit acid products a few days before treatment and follow strict UV protection. We create an individual pre- and post-treatment plan for you as part of your consultation. If you have any questions beforehand, you can contact us at any time during our opening hours by phone, in person at our practice in Zurich or by e-mail.

Can the fractional laser be used for melasma?

In principle yes, but with caution and always on an individual basis. In hormonally induced hyperpigmentation such as melasma, there is a risk of temporary worsening. In selected cases and under close dermatological supervision, a low-energy fractional treatment can nevertheless be useful.

Is treatment possible in summer?

We generally recommend treatment during the less sunny months. The reason: After the procedure, the skin is more sensitive to the sun for some time. If treatment is still carried out in summer, strict sun protection with a high protection factor (at least SPF 50) before and after the treatment is essential.

How long do the results last?

Ideally, the results can last for several years. The exact duration depends on skin type, lifestyle, genetic factors and individual skincare habits. Regular dermatological check-ups and, if necessary, maintenance treatments can help stabilise the result in the long term.

Which follow-up treatments can support skin regeneration?

Combining the treatment with PRP, skinboosters or hydrating facial treatments promotes skin renewal. We also recommend soothing, non-irritating skincare products and consistent UV protection.

Can fractional laser treatment be used in men?

Yes, the method is suitable for all skin types and is expressly an option for men as well – for example in the case of acne scars, sun damage or early wrinkle formation. The device settings are always adjusted individually to the skin’s needs. Male skin is often more robust and has more visible pores, which we take into account when planning treatment.

Our Q&A texts are by no means a substitute for a medical consultation. For an individual and well-founded medical assessment, we recommend a personal consultation at the Swiss Derma Clinic. We are happy to take the time for you!
