Red veins occur at any age

Red veins affect all age groups – and unfortunately often the face. The causes are diverse. Environmental influences, sun exposure, and predisposition are just a few examples. Once present, they do not disappear on their own. Fortunately, there are now good treatment methods. From laser treatments to radiofrequency to the use of modern biostimulators and special medications. Our specialists, Dr. Georgouli and Dr. Hatzipouflis, tailor the treatment to your individual needs. Most patients notice a significant improvement after just a few sessions.

What are red veins?

Red veins, also known as telangiectasias or couperose, are small dilated blood vessels on and in the skin. They mostly occur on the face and are caused by various factors, including genetic predisposition, sun exposure, environmental influences, or hormonal effects.

In some cases, dilated and red veins appear as an early form of the inflammatory skin disease rosacea. To keep the skin appearance "calm" and even, we recommend a comprehensive skin care consultation and a treatment program tailored precisely to you.

How can red veins be treated?

There are several treatment options for red and dilated veins on the face, neck and décolleté, or hands. The choice of suitable treatment method depends on the severity, skin circulation, skin texture, and your individual expectations. Often, various procedures are combined. For only slightly dilated veins, medical cosmetic treatments like OxyGeneo can lead to good results. Other approaches include laser therapy and biostimulators.

How does laser therapy work for treating red veins?

In medical laser therapy, special wavelengths are generated. The focused and concentrated light essentially coagulates the blood vessels, the blood clots and is later broken down by the body. The treatment is very effective – no scars are formed. A session lasts between 20 and 40 minutes.

The number of sessions required depends on various factors, including the extent of the affected areas and the individual reaction to the treatment. For optimal results, several sessions at intervals of a few weeks are usually necessary. We will discuss the interval with you in person at our practice in Zurich.

Is laser treatment painful?

Most patients describe the sensation during a laser treatment as tingling or pricking on the skin. Additionally, there is a development of heat. To minimize any discomfort, at the Swiss Derma Clinic in Zurich we use cooling gels and topical anesthetic creams to make the treatment as comfortable as possible for you.

What are biostimulators and how can they help in the treatment of red veins?

Biostimulators are injected into the skin to stimulate the tissue and produce new collagen. These substances strengthen the connective tissue and improve elasticity. In treating red veins, the visibility of the vessels can be reduced and the skin structure improved.

When can a medical peel be useful in treating red veins?

In a medical peel, we use specific solutions to remove dead skin cells and stimulate skin regeneration. This makes the skin structure firmer – which in turn affects the superficial blood vessels. Note: This treatment is only considered for light veins and robust skin structure.

What side effects can occur?

Side effects vary depending on the treatment method. Most patients experience temporary redness, swelling, or mild skin irritation after treatments. These effects usually subside within a few hours to days. If possible, follow the advice of our dermatologists and avoid sun exposure and intense training in the days after treatment.

Can I continue my normal skin care after the treatments?

In many cases, you can continue to care for your skin as usual. However, sometimes it makes sense to switch to special products for a period of time to further support the treatment results and to avoid irritation. If you have any questions about skin care, you can contact us at any time.
