The HealVitalityMed (HVM) concept

Health is more than the absence of disease. It emerges when body, mind, and life circumstances are in balance. To achieve this, we need to identify and address the causes of symptoms—not just the symptoms themselves. This is exactly where our specialist physician, Dr. Ajsa Schenkel, and the HealVitalityMed (HVM) concept come in.

Holistic medicine: putting the person at the centre

Persistent complaints often cannot be resolved by medication alone—and are not always easy to explain. Causes are frequently complex: psychological factors, emotional stress, and life circumstances can amplify physical symptoms. Conversely, pain, limitations, or itching can affect mental wellbeing. In holistic medicine, we therefore consider the whole person:

  • Nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and relaxation
  • Digestion and gut health
  • Emotional wellbeing and stress management

Functional medicine: searching for root causes

Why does someone become ill—and why now?

Functional medicine explores these questions. We look at lifestyle, environmental exposures, and individual metabolism, and determine whether hereditary factors play a role. The goal is to recognise connections—especially those that are easily overlooked, such as imbalances in the gut, sleep disorders, or a lack of specific trace elements.

Equally important is what nutrition and chronic stress do to our cells and genes. Nutrigenomics (nutrition and genes) and genetics/epigenetics (when genes are “switched on” or “off”) are therefore integral to holistic medicine.

Orthomolecular medicine: using micronutrients wisely

Vitamins, minerals, coenzymes, amino acids, fatty acids, and trace elements are not miracle cures or luxury add-ons—they are the basic building blocks of our body’s functions. If they are lacking, metabolism can falter. In our Zurich clinic, we assess whether a deficiency is present and correct it.

Orthomolecular medicine goes back to chemist and Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. He described maintaining health through substances the body already needs—provided in optimal concentrations. Today, we know how important micronutrients are, for example vitamin D for immune defence or omega-3 fatty acids for heart and vascular health.

Nutrition as medicine

“You are what you eat” has a scientific basis. A diet rich in fresh, plant-based foods is anti-inflammatory and health-promoting. Evidence also comes from the Blue Zones—regions where people are particularly healthy and long-lived. What they share is a simple pattern: minimally processed foods, daily movement, and strong social ties.

Gut and microbiome

A healthy microbiome influences the immune system, hormones, and even mood. With targeted micronutrients, we can support this balance. In our practice, we analyse which micronutrients your gut needs and replenish them accordingly.

Cellular energy: mitochondria

If you feel persistently tired and low on energy despite adequate sleep, the answer may lie in the mitochondria—the “powerhouses” of our cells. Mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy required for bodily functions.

Individually selected micronutrients (e.g., CoQ10, ALA, L-carnitine) can support ATP production.

Detoxification and environmental medicine

Our body can eliminate toxins—an excellent protective mechanism. If the system is overloaded, we identify relevant exposures and support the body’s natural detox pathways. This reduces the burden on liver, kidneys, and gut and may improve overall wellbeing.

Mind–immune interplay

Body and mind are one. Stress can exacerbate inflammation and promote sleep problems. It can weaken immune defences and foster illness. In turn, this may trigger depressive symptoms. Holistic medicine addresses both sides. Examples of helpful micronutrients: B vitamins and omega-3 can modulate neurotransmitters and inflammatory responses.

Epigenetics: genes are not destiny

Everyone carries genes that may increase the risk of certain diseases. We are not at the mercy of our genes: whether they become active depends strongly on lifestyle and nutrition. Epigenetics examines how diet, exercise, and stress processing can switch genes on or off.

HealVitalityMed – FAQ

FAQ

HealVitalityMed – FAQ

What is orthomolecular medicine?

Orthomolecular medicine focuses on identifying and correcting missing or insufficient micronutrients. In practice, we begin with blood or saliva testing, then determine which substances—and in what dosage—are appropriate.

What does functional medicine mean in the context of holistic medicine?

Functional medicine asks: What triggered the illness? It incorporates nutrition, environmental factors, stress, and genetic influences into assessment and counselling. Ideally, it reveals root causes that might otherwise be overlooked. It is part of holistic medicine, in which we consider and treat the person as a whole—mind, body, and environment.

What role does the microbiome play in skin, mental health, and the immune system?

The microbiome is crucial for healthy body functions and immune defence. For example, an imbalance of key gut bacteria can heighten inflammation, promote allergies, and affect mood (“gut–brain axis”). Patients often report improvements in skin conditions such as acne or atopic eczema when the overall microbiome (including on the skin) is stabilised. Chronic fatigue or low mood can also improve.

Can orthomolecular medicine help prevent disease?

Micronutrients support central body functions. For example: vitamin D strengthens immune defences; omega-3 fatty acids protect heart and vessels; zinc supports skin health and wound healing. Multiple studies show that optimal micronutrient status can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, or infections. The foundation is always an individual, expert assessment and counselling.

Our Q&A texts are by no means a substitute for a medical consultation. For an individual and well-founded medical assessment, we recommend a personal consultation at the Swiss Derma Clinic. We are happy to take the time for you!
