Functional medicine: searching for root causes
Why does someone become ill—and why now?
Functional medicine explores these questions. We look at lifestyle, environmental exposures, and individual metabolism, and determine whether hereditary factors play a role. The goal is to recognise connections—especially those that are easily overlooked, such as imbalances in the gut, sleep disorders, or a lack of specific trace elements.
Equally important is what nutrition and chronic stress do to our cells and genes. Nutrigenomics (nutrition and genes) and genetics/epigenetics (when genes are “switched on” or “off”) are therefore integral to holistic medicine.
Orthomolecular medicine: using micronutrients wisely
Vitamins, minerals, coenzymes, amino acids, fatty acids, and trace elements are not miracle cures or luxury add-ons—they are the basic building blocks of our body’s functions. If they are lacking, metabolism can falter. In our Zurich clinic, we assess whether a deficiency is present and correct it.
Orthomolecular medicine goes back to chemist and Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. He described maintaining health through substances the body already needs—provided in optimal concentrations. Today, we know how important micronutrients are, for example vitamin D for immune defence or omega-3 fatty acids for heart and vascular health.
Nutrition as medicine
“You are what you eat” has a scientific basis. A diet rich in fresh, plant-based foods is anti-inflammatory and health-promoting. Evidence also comes from the Blue Zones—regions where people are particularly healthy and long-lived. What they share is a simple pattern: minimally processed foods, daily movement, and strong social ties.
Gut and microbiome
A healthy microbiome influences the immune system, hormones, and even mood. With targeted micronutrients, we can support this balance. In our practice, we analyse which micronutrients your gut needs and replenish them accordingly.
Cellular energy: mitochondria
If you feel persistently tired and low on energy despite adequate sleep, the answer may lie in the mitochondria—the “powerhouses” of our cells. Mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy required for bodily functions.
Individually selected micronutrients (e.g., CoQ10, ALA, L-carnitine) can support ATP production.
Detoxification and environmental medicine
Our body can eliminate toxins—an excellent protective mechanism. If the system is overloaded, we identify relevant exposures and support the body’s natural detox pathways. This reduces the burden on liver, kidneys, and gut and may improve overall wellbeing.
Mind–immune interplay
Body and mind are one. Stress can exacerbate inflammation and promote sleep problems. It can weaken immune defences and foster illness. In turn, this may trigger depressive symptoms. Holistic medicine addresses both sides. Examples of helpful micronutrients: B vitamins and omega-3 can modulate neurotransmitters and inflammatory responses.
Epigenetics: genes are not destiny
Everyone carries genes that may increase the risk of certain diseases. We are not at the mercy of our genes: whether they become active depends strongly on lifestyle and nutrition. Epigenetics examines how diet, exercise, and stress processing can switch genes on or off.
